June 21st is the sacred day for skateboarders worldwide. It's not just a day; it's a declaration — no school, no work, just pure, unadulterated skating from sunrise to sunset. And what better day to do it than the longest day of the year? June 21st offers maximum daylight, and we're here to milk every second for all it's worth.
In Egypt, we've been celebrating Go Skateboarding Day since 2003, but it was in 2006 that we truly made our mark with our first major event in Rehab City.
Fast forward to 2023, and Sahara is stepping up to the plate, marking the 20th anniversary of the first GSD with our own brand of chaos and camaraderie. Last year, the heavy hitters — Amulet Skateboards, Temple Skateboards, and Oxada SkateShop — joined forces to throw down the first-ever Go Skateboarding Day at a skatepark in Egypt.
The vibes were electric, the tricks were sick, and the community came out in full force. Yours truly, the editor-in-chief and master of both goofy and regular, had an unforgettable moment (and not in a good way) during a game of skate. A simple BS 360 ollie on flat ground turned into a nightmare when I tore my ACL. But hey, skateboarding is about pushing limits, and sometimes those limits push back.
Despite that gnarly mishap, the day was filled with epic moments, killer tricks, and the kind of camaraderie that makes skateboarding more than just a sport — it's an art form, a lifestyle.
